Chinese export bowl, £4000 at C&T.
Although the exact print source has not been identified (it may have been an adaptation or evolved after being recopied many times), it bears comparison with the works of artist James Seymour that were made popular by the London printmaker Thomas Burford.
A multitude of subtle variations on the theme are known with this particular bowl, measuring just over 18in (41cm) across, decorated with two large scenes of European huntsmen and hounds in a wooded landscape, two smaller cartouches of exotic birds and a medallion to the well depicting a figure holding a gun as his dogs flush out a pair of pheasants.
The scenes were particularly well drawn and the bowl in reasonable condition apart from a hair crack.
At C&T (22% buyer’s premium) in Kenardington, Kent, on February 8, it sold at £4000 (estimate £300-400).
