K6 red public telephone box designed in 1935 – estimate £1000-1500 at Hansons.
A classic example of the red public telephone box designed in 1935 to mark the silver jubilee of the coronation of King George V is up for auction at Hansons on July 18, estimated at £1000-1500.
The K6, which was made from 1936-53, was created by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott (1880-1960).
The red box was the result of a competition in 1924 to design a kiosk acceptable to the London metropolitan boroughs. They had been reluctant to embrace the Post Office’s concrete K1 design, the first public telephone box launched in 1921. Gilbert Scott’s initial design was the K2.
This K6 was bought by the vendor’s late husband in the late 1980s and had stood in a driveway in the village of Blythe Bridge, near Stoke, Staffordshire.

Pre-1832 Cornish tin ingot ‘coinage block’, recovered near Portreath, stamped HDW for Harvey Davis Williams – estimate £5000-8000 at David Lay.
A large collection of Cornish tin ingots and mining artefacts from the collection of Neil Mercer is being offered at Penzance auction house David Lay on July 14.
This pre-1832 tin ingot ‘coinage block’, recovered near Portreath, stamped HDW for Harvey Davis Williams and with two other unique hot marks, measures 13½in x 6in x 2ft 1in (34 x 15 x 63cm) and weighs 378lbs. It is estimated at £5000-8000. The saleroom notes that this ingot is being sold in situ and will need to be collected by appointment from a property near Yelverton, Devon, and will require specialist handling/lifting equipment.
Mercer has worked with the photographer and designer Peter Russell to produce The Spirit Of Dartmoor Tin, a large-format, lavishly illustrated, limited edition artists’ publication due to be released in late 2022/early 2023. Most of these items up for auction are included. The book will cover the tin-working history of Cornwall and Dartmoor and is the culmination of 14 years of research and practical tin working.

The portrait painter John Frederick Harrison Dutton is best known for his depictions of society figures in 19th-century Britain.
His sitter here, however, is the author Thomas Hardy, one of the most significant literary forces of the day. Dated 1890, the oil shows him seated half-length, turned to the right.

This 17th century Hungarian silver tankard was consigned to Dawsons’ London office for sale in the firm’s Jewellery, Silver & Watches sale in Maidenhead on July 21 with an estimate of £4000-6000.
In addition to the repousée and chased decoration depicting winged putti, mythical birds and male and female warrior figures it carries an inscription reading Toldalagy. Mihaly Mihalcz Ersebet Ano. 1623.

Russell Flint lower left, the (29 x 40cm) work is also signed, inscribed and dated From a Window in Venice / W Russell Flint / May 1958 verso, and further signed and inscribed From a Window in Venice / W Russell Flint on the backboard.
It was exhibited at the Royal Watercolour Society in London in 1958 and has a provenance in that same year to dealer Frost and Reed.
