A Comic Book Auctions (19% buyer’s premium) timed online sale that ended on November 21 provided just such an opportunity.

Among the rarities presented were copies of the first three issues of POW!, a comic launched in January 1967. Each was described as being in good condition and all were complete with their original promotional gifts.

In the case of the very first issue, illustrated above, it was a press-out card Spider-Matic Gun and all six Spider-Disc Bullets.

On the pages of that launch issue Spider-Man was joined by The Dolls of St Dominic’s; Nick Fury, an agent of S.H.I.E.L.D.; Dare-A-Day Davy and Wee Willie Harris, the Spy from Skye.

Estimated at £250-350, it was the highest grade example ever seen at auction according to CBA’s Malcolm Phillips, but it was that free gift which really pushed the bidding to £1920.

Issue No 2, which came with a reversed Spider-Man body transfer, and No 3 – in which the added attraction was an irresistible Haggis Launcher Game – sold at £410 apiece.
