This 17th century Edo period four-panel folding paper screen is relatively small at 90cm x 1.78m and was probably made for use in the tea room. Worked on paper in ink, colours, and gofun (crushed calcified shell) with silk mounts the subject, perhaps decorated by an artist from the Tosa school, is the shores of Lake Biwa.

The estimate at Barry Hawkins in Downham Market, Norfolk, on January 12 is £1000-1500.

The eclectic collection of Alison Barker (1951-2021) of London and Chichester comes for sale at Trevanion in Whitchurch, Shropshire, on January 12.

Barker, a London barrister and lifetime collector, began acquiring Roman and Egyptian antiquities in the 1960s-70s before latterly moving into early oak carvings and furniture. In 2016 her collection of engraved coins was sold through St James’s.

This headless Roman marble bust on an integral tapered socle c.2nd century AD is estimated at £3000-5000.

This late Victorian silver plated tea tray, for sale at Stroud Auction Rooms on January 12-13, is of Suffragette interest.

It includes the inscription Presented to Miss Downing and Miss Outerbridge by the Congregation and Parishioners of St Mark’s, Victoria Park as a token of affection and in appreciation of their self-sacrificing labours among the sick and poor of the parish for ten years, March 1898.

Downing and Outerbridge both later received the WSPU Hunger Strike medal (Frances Outerbridge’s silver medal is also included in this sale).

The tray, consigned by a direct descendant, is guided at £100-200.

This polychrome painted dower chest on stand, c.1750, is one of a small number of examples associated with the Channel Islands.

The use of tulips and carnations representing love and betrothal has a long tradition in Europe and also features in furniture made in Pennsylvania. This example, a piece sold by Martel Maides on Guernsey in 2002, has featured in a number of articles on the subject.

At the sale of Furniture, Works of Art and Clocks on January 12-13 at Woolley & Wallis in Salisbury the estimate is £5000-8000.

Lyon & Turnbull is holding a sale titled The Minoprio Collection: British Design in the Arts & Crafts Tradition on January 11. This private collection comes from John Minoprio who grew up surrounded by Cotswolds school furniture, designed either by his architect father Anthony Minoprio (1900-88) or by Edward Barnsley (1900-1987).

He himself enjoyed a long, friendly and productive relationship with Barnsley and the craftsmen in his workshop at Froxfield in Hampshire.

The furniture and works of art sale at Lawrences of Crewkerne on January 21 includes a set of George II walnut seating furniture.

The set, comprising settee and six chairs, has an excellent provenance. The items were made c.1740 for Creech Grange near Wareham, the Dorset seat of the Bond family from the late 17th century until the estate was sold in 1975. The chairs were photographed in situ in the library by Country Life in 1931.

The house was remodelled in 1739-40 by Francis Cartwright, an architect from Blandford who worked in tandem with Blandford furnishing firm John and William Bastard. A surviving note in the family account book for September 1741 reads: “pd. Bush for carriage of chairs from Blandford 5s.’ and for May 1742 is an entry recording ‘paid Mr Bastard’s bill £14.9.0.”

Handwritten account of the Peninsular War penned by Major General Sir George Ridout Bingham – estimate £3000-5000 at Halls on January 12.

The sale at Halls of Shrewsbury on in January 12 includes a handwritten account of the Peninsular War penned by Major General Sir George Ridout Bingham (1777-1833).

The manuscript of around 32,000 words covers the period between April 1809 and March 1810, including the battle of Talavera and the long winter march to the north of Portugal. It was written by Sir George in 1820 using letters he had sent home, mainly to his mother.

Estimate £3000-5000.

A Japan Meiji, 1870, 10 yen Year 3 pattern gold coin, large flan, diameter 32mm, is estimated at £50,000-80,000 in Toovey’s January 19 auction in Washington, West Sussex.

Toovey’s says this “extremely rare coin” was discovered on a routine house clearance valuation appointment with a group of other gold coins at a local property.

It adds: “It is believed by the vendor to have been in the family’s possession since the late 19th century and is currently one of only five known examples. Of the four others, one is in the Bank of Japan Collection, one is in the British Museum and two were auctioned by Heritage Auctions in USA in 2011 and 2014.”
