The 11¼in (28.5cm) patinated bronze head from 1989, which is signed and numbered 3/10 and has a provenance to the London gallery Beaux Arts, 2000, realised $38,000 (£27,940) from a trade purchaser.

The head was originally conceived by Frink in 1989 as an emblem for the television programme The Midas Touch which was presented by Anthony Sampson and directed by Mick Csaky, Frink’s stepson.

Various other examples have passed through auctions in the London and New York salerooms; the highest auction price for a Midas Head being the £64,000 paid at Sotheby’s in 2004 for a version numbered 9/10 (source: Artprice by Artmarket).
