This early Georgian walnut open armchair was one of the highlights of the sale of Old Master paintings, English and Continental furniture, silver and decorative arts held by Doyle (26/21/15% buyer’s premium) in New York on January 26.
The George II period chair is upholstered in needlework and set on foliate headed cabriole legs with ball and claw feet and carved with a shell to the centre of the seat rail.
It has later blocks and corner blocks to the back legs and wear to the upholstery but easily outpaced its modest $2000-3000 guide to take $30,000 (£22,060).
