More’s ‘Fruteful and Pleasant’ Utopia – £4000 at Kinghams.
Printed by CH St John Hornby’s Ashendene Press in Chelsea, this Fruteful and Pleasant Worke of the Best State of a Publique Weale, and of The New Yle Called Utopia, which came in original cardboard covers, sold at £4000 to a collector.
It was among books offered as part of a much broader-ranging December 9-11 sale held by Kinghams (23% buyer’s premium) of Moreton-in-Marsh.
Three of those 20 copies printed on vellum have made more at auction, one reaching £7500, but the previous best for a paper copy was £3200 for an example signed by St John Hornby that was offered by Bonhams in 2018.
