Georg Fischer started the toy firm in Nuremberg at the start of the 20th century and it ceased production in 1958. Graded C8 and estimated at $300-500, the 8in (20.5cm) long toy was offered at the Bruneau auction in Cranston, Rhode Island, on December 11.

Saleroom president Kevin Bruneau said: “While it was not the largest section by lot count, the collection of early tin toys was fantastic. They all came out of one estate in Ware, Massachusetts. They were the lady’s mother’s toys. The Fischer clown was one toy we might not see again for a very long time.”
