Johan Zoffany’s portrait Beggar’s Ballad is offered in the region of £1m at Moretti Fine Art.
The smaller format event involves LAW supporting the 35 participants who are holding exhibitions and events during the December ‘Classic art’ season.
The online LAW Digital event will reflect this, running from November 21-December 21.
The LAW team said it is focusing on 2023 to create an event that “fully embraces the changes to the London art scene over the last couple of years”.
This c.1800s pencil on paper study of two young boys by Théodore Valério (1819-79) is available from Stephen Ongpin Fine Art at its winter exhibition with an asking price of £14,000.
Among the exhibitors this season are Stephen Ongpin Fine Art, Philip Mould & Company and Elliott Fine Art.
Actor portrayed
Moretti Fine Art is holding an exhibition (December 1-16) focused on artist Johan Zoffany (1773-1810). It centres on Zoffany’s 1796 portrait Beggar’s Ballad of the actor Edward Townsend which it bought at Duke’s on September 29 (as reported in ATG No 2563).
ATG’s front page earlier this year when the picture was sold at Duke’s.
It remained in Zoffany’s possession until his death and changed ownership just three times in its 225-year history and retained the original 18th century frame.
Moretti cleaned the oil painting and undertook technical examination at The Courtauld Institute of Art, discovering Zoffany reused the panel three times. An X-ray revealed two underlying portraits. It is offered at Moretti in the region of £1m.
As part of the exhibition Moretti will host a series of events including a talk titled Zoffany and the Theatre and a conversation between Dr Martin Postle, senior research fellow at the Paul Mellon Centre (and curator of the 2012 Zoffany show at the Royal Academy), Dr Robin Simon, editor of The British Art Journal, and Moretti’s senior partner Letizia Treves.
