Küchenmeisterei, printed in 1500 by Johann Hans Schönsperger of Augsburg, is a very rare work indeed, said the German auction house.
The copy it was offering showed small marginal tears and contemporary annotations to the woodcut illustrated title-page reproduced here, and an old repair to the inner margin has resulted in the loss of part of the image of food being prepared and cooked.
In a very recent binding, this great rarity also presented a few other shortcomings of condition and though a hand-written title has now been provided as the first leaf, the original (the one shown) was rather curiously to be found as the last leaf of the last quire.
A real rarity, however, it sold at €38,000 (£33,340).
