The upcoming British Art Fair will feature a Contemporary art showcase.
A new feature, dubbed Solo Contemporary, brings together 10 Contemporary galleries each displaying the work of one British artist in a showcase. The project is curated by Zavier Ellis of Charlie Smith, a gallery in Shoreditch.
The new section was among the details the fair released along with its exhibitor list. Much of it will be familiar as it returns to the Saatchi Gallery from September 29-October 2 after two years away because of Covid.
It features Modern, Post-War and Contemporary galleries. Exhibitors include Osborne Samuel, Piano Nobile, Jonathan Clark, Austin/Desmond, Open Eye and Panter & Hall.
Ramsay Fairs, known for its many Contemporary events including the Affordable Art Fair series, acquired the event in the spring. The British Art Fair is its first with a significant non-Contemporary art contingent.
Launched in 1988 by Gay Hutson and the late Bunny Wynn, the fair (previously known as the 20/21 British Art Fair) was purchased by brothers Robert and Johnny Sandelson in 2018. Robert organised the fair in 2018 and 2019 with Hutson as a consultant. Hutson has stayed on with Ramsay as fair director.
At the time of purchasing Will Ramsay told ATG: “Modern British art has always been a strong part of the market and it has got stronger. It will continue to be good. We will try to bring a new generation of collectors to Modern British art.”
The tradition of special exhibitions at the fair continues.
One features paintings by Scottish artist William Johnstone (1897-1981), principal of Central School of Arts and Crafts. The others showcase works by Royal Scottish Academy graduates and a selection from The Ingram Collection of Modern British Art.
