Large-scale modello created by the Italian artist Francesco Solimena – €1m (£862,070) at Tajan.
The subject of the painting is The Triumph of Faith and the Glory of the Dominicans and was commissioned for the church by the Dominican order.
The modello, which is painted in oil on canvas measuring 7ft 6in x 3ft 1in (2.3m x 93cm) and was discussed in detail in ATG No 2547, realised €1m (£862,070).
The price sets a new auction high for the artist, surpassing the $760,000 (then £466,032) paid at Sotheby’s New York back in 1998 for an oil on canvas of Venus with lapis curing Aeneas of wounds of war against King Latinus (source: Artprice by Artmarket).
Tajan’s painting was purchased by the London dealer Robilant + Veona for a foreign institution.
