It was one of the vintage photographs in the 139-lot online sale of photographs from the collection of actor Richard Gere held by Christie’s New York (26% buyer’s premium) which closed on April 7.

The 12½ x 16½in (32 x 41cm) photo, which was acquired in 1996 from the Fahey Klein Gallery, Los Angeles, is one of le Gray’s celebrated marine images and depicts the Mediterranean with Mount Agde.

It dates from 1856-59 and has a facsimile signature in red ink and an embossed photograph’s credit to the mount.

It made $60,000 (£46,155) against a guide of $30,000-50,000.
