The sale includes a good selection of early paper works plus daguerreotypes and other cased images, including two well-preserved examples of early French photography by Adalbert Cuvelier and his son Eugène.

Pictured here is Au Bas du Point de Vue du Camp by Eugène (1837-1900) from the 1860s. The photograph bears a notable resemblance to a drawing by Théodore Rousseau entitled Route en Forêt, c.1860, and both the photograph and the drawing appear to have been made from similar vantage points.

Once part of the collection of John Chandler Bancroft (1835-1901), Middletown, Rhode Island, the photo was last sold at Sotheby’s in 2007 as part of a single-owner sale of works by the Cuveliers. Estimate £5000-7000.
