This pair of Victorian Essex Crystal cufflinks, c.1880, are set with two round reverse intaglio rock crystals, carved and painted with the heads of pugs.

Originating in Belgium in the mid-19th century, the reverse carving and painting was applied to the reverse of the cabochon. The resulting images, viewed through the dome, had a three-dimensional, life-like appearance.

Animals and sporting themes are the most common, and often these pieces commemorate real animals. The genre is highly collectable today, and the theme of pugs is likely to delight dog lovers.

The cufflinks are available for £8500 from Hancocks London.
