It will be offered in the Easter auction series to be held by Besch in Cannes from April 16-18, with an estimate of €60,000-90,000.

The 5ft 6in (1.69m) wide marble topped piece, in mahogany and mahogany veener, is profusely applied with gilt bronze mounts, one of them signed F Linke, and with Wedgwood medallions.

It is based on a pair of 18th century commodes by Joseph Stockel and Guillame Benneman that were initially made for Marie Antoinette’s chamber at the château de Compiègne and were then in the salon des jeux at Fontainebleau.
