Pitched at £2000-3000 at the July 21 Roseberys (25% buyer’s premium) sale in West Norwood, the 4ft wide x 3ft deep (1.22m x 91cm) ) walnut partners’ desk sold over the phone at £9500.
Oak carving of Salome – £3200 at Roseberys.
Also eclipsing the estimate was a 17in (44cm) tall oak carving of Salome bearing the head of John the Baptist. Carved in 16th century Netherlandish style, it was, in fact no earlier than the first half of the 20th century.
Nevertheless, it sold on quality to a Belgian bidder at £3200 against a £600-800 estimate.
