The six lots on November 6 were a mix of furniture and carpets by the famous French designer-decorator. Some of the pieces can be seen in situ in an archive photo of the villa.

Topping the bill at €16,500 (£14,225) against a €8000-12,000 guide was a large 2ft 11in (90cm) diameter circular mirror in a patinated brass frame – previewed in ATG No 2314 and pictured here.

A 5ft (1.53m) wide sideboard in violetwood veneer with a central fall-fronted compartment, monogrammed lower right, sold for €13,500 (£11,640); a small writing table in mahogany with curved supports inlaid to the rectangular top with a panel of oregon pine veneer realised €1700 (£1465); a single modernist violetwood chair retaining the original silk and linen upholstery woven by Vinay & Cie made €3600 (£3105).

From the carpets, a suite of three modernist rugs woven with an abstract pattern of squares and rectangles sold for €4000 (£3450). The largest measured 8ft x 3ft 9in (2.45 x 1.15m) and the smaller two 5ft 10in x 2ft 8in (1.80m x 82cm) and 5ft 8in x 2ft 8in (1.72m x 82cm).

A larger carpet in three parts woven with design of chevrons and triangles on a chocolate colour ground failed to find a buyer, however.
