“Surplus to requirements from a magnificent Midlands hall, and never having been on the market in generations”, they were engraved with a coat of arms and weighed around 24oz, with hallmarks for London 1699 and the maker’s mark SM under a bird.

Valued for insurance 30 years ago for £6000, they had a guide of £3000-5000 and, indeed, sold at £6000 in Stoke-on-Trent on November 11-13.
