The clock, purchased in 1991 by the Samuel Courtauld Trust, was designed by Somerset House architect William Chambers (1723-1796) with the gilt bronze and blue john case made by Matthew Boulton and the works by Derby clockmaker John Whitehurst.

It will be shown on top of Chambers’ Gower House table, which was designed at the time he was working on Somerset House.

West Dean College has worked on Coutauld clocks for several years. Sibley’s tasks included dismantling and dry cleaning the movement and the repair of a broken fusee click.
