Duke’s of Dorchester is staging its November 6 Militaria auction to run alongside a fair at The Tank Museum in Bovington, Dorset.
It features a collection of Winston Churchill items belonging to the late Ivan Sheppard, who was the former prime minister’s nurse in the late 1950s and lived with him at his home in Chartwell, Kent.
The group on offer includes a named cardboard hatbox with the address 10 Downing Street SW from Scott’s hatters, Piccadilly, London; signed letters and a photo signed by Churchill; luggage labels, cigar boxes; black and white photographs including Churchill in Greece accompanied by other members of the Onassis cruise party and Churchill in the Canary Islands with Aristotle Onassis when they were guests on his yacht Christina; Churchill in his painting studio at Chartwell House; Churchill and Lady Churchill’s 50th anniversary photograph; feathers from Churchill’s swans at Chartwell; newspaper cuttings and other literature from Churchill’s travels and others.

Marked for Fabergé and workmaster Jenny Väkevä, it was made in St Petersburg in 1902-08 and is set with three Russian coins depicting Empress Elizabeth.

Fashion designs for Princess Anne by Royal dressmaker Sir Norman Hartnell (1901-79) will be auctioned as part of a large archive of drawings and other papers from the company coming up at Ewbank’s sale in Surrey on November 11.
The designs and documents, mostly relating to the 1960s-70s, were the personal gift from one of the last owners of the company to the vendor.
Among those designs are two original 1970s fashion illustrations in watercolour, pen and pencil marked HRH Princess Anne. One is in embellished evening dress in turquoise and white, the other an A line dress in lemon with matching coat.
The 14 x 10in (35.5 x 25cm) pictures are estimated at £150-250.

Woolley & Wallis is selling the contents of Upper Slaughter Manor, the collection of Micheál and Elizabeth Feller, in Salisbury on November 9-10.
The sale features a number of fine needleworks including this William and Mary band sampler of the Judith Hayle type. It has the initials IH for Judith Hayle, and the name Martha Cussen.
The School of Judith Hayle samplers has been well documented by Edwina Ehrman. Until recently there were 11 known samplers by pupils taught by the widow Judith or Iudah Haylem in her native town of Ipswich. This example, displaying the distinctive signature cartouches and bands and text from a shared repertoire, is a 12th.
A candidate for the stitching of this sampler is Martha, daughter of Edmond and Hannah Cousin of Brantham, Suffolk, who would have been around 10 when she dated her sampler on August The 39 1696.

The jovial design on a bright yellow background is by Leonetto Cappiello (1875-1942), the Italian commercial artist who mainly lived and worked in Paris.
Cappiello is now often called ‘the father of modern advertising’ because of his innovation in poster design. He was, for example, the first poster artist to use bold figures popping out of monochromatic backgrounds.

This 17in (42cm) example, made by André Romain Guilmet, Paris c.1890, is known as The Foundryman and features a pumping steam hammer and a figure flattening a steel rod.
The two-train, eight-day movement striking every half an hour is stamped on the backplate with an inscription suggesting the firm was a gold medal winner at the Paris international exhibition. Raised on a lacquered base and under a glass dome, it is expected to bring £5000-7000 at McTear’s in Glasgow on November 4.

Pencil portrait of Jean Shepeard by Ronald Ossory Dunlop – estimate £200-300 at Batemans.
Stamford saleroom Batemans is to offer items from the collection of British artist and actress Jean Shepeard (1904-89) on November 6.
The works have come from the estate of her niece, the sculptor Doreen Kern (1931-2021) and include over 600 original sketches which will be offered as 35 lots.
In her early days, Shepeard trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art sharing a flat with Peggy Ashcroft.
Although she had a successful stage career (appearing in productions alongside John Gielgud, Anthony Quayle and Sybil Thorndike as well the 1942 film Thunder Rock with Michael Redgrave and James Mason), she was also a talented artist. Shepeard became a fringe member of the Bloomsbury set, exhibiting with Vanessa Bell at the Modern Picture Library. She also showed her works with Francis Bacon and Roi de Mestre at Bacon’s Queensbury Mews rooms in 1930 – the only woman to ever exhibit with Bacon.
Among the works on offer is a pencil portrait of Shepeard by Ronald Ossory Dunlop (1894-1973). As well as being lovers, Dunlop supported her to paint and exhibited alongside her at the Modern Picture Library.
The 7.5 x 4.5in x (20 x 12cm) drawing is estimated at £200-300.
