Founded in 1776, Robert Strahan & Co became one of Ireland’s premier furniture designers, commissioned to design and manufacture for some of the great Irish country houses such as Doneraile Court, Lisnavagh and Monte Alverno.

The firm started trading from 10-11 Chancery Lane, Dublin, but between 1815-45 (when this William IV-era piece was made) was based at 24-25 Henry Street. In 1845 it expanded further still into 5 Leinster Street.

Admired for its Thomas Hope styling and fine quality, it more than trebled top estimate to take €22,000 (£20,000) at Adam’s (25% buyer’s premium) Country House Collections sale on October 19 at Townley Hall, Dublin.
