Thomas Gibson Fine Art is selling this drawing of Russian composer Igor Stravinsky by Alberto Giacometti (1901-66), priced at $60,000.

The pair first met in Paris in 1957 – the same year the 17 x 13in (43 x 32cm) pencil on paper sketch was executed – when the composer was 75 years old and visiting Paris to record the musical score for the ballet Agon.

Giacometti had been commissioned to create the record sleeve which led to a formal introduction of the two artists by the Russian artistic patron Pierre Souvtchinsky.

The two became good friends and met regularly on Stravinsky’s return trips to Paris.
