At the top of the price lists in the book section of a March 30 sale held by Aldridges (20% buyer’s premium) of Bath was a copy of the 1931 Golden Cockerel edition of The Four Gospels illustrated with woodcuts by Eric Gill. One of the 500 paper copies, it sold at £7000.
Shown above is a page from the Gregynog Press edition of William Caxton’s translation, ‘Out of Frensshe In To Englysshe’, of The Fables of Esope that was published in an edition of 250 copies in that same year.
It was the wood engravings produced by Agnes Miller Parker for this work that fully established her reputation in this field. Estimated at £600-800, it sold instead at £3000.
This was also a work in which she enjoyed the collaboration of her husband, the typographer and sculptor, William McCance.
