Crichton-Stuart takes art week role
Dealer Anthony Crichton-Stuart has joined London Art Week (LAW) as a board member.
Now a director of dealership Agnews, Crichton-Stuart spent much of his career at Christie’s, working in the Old Master paintings department in both London and New York.
He returned to London in 2009 and joined the revamped Thos Agnew & Sons in 2013 after the long-established dealership (founded in 1817) was acquired by a new American owner.
LAW started its spring online lectures, tours and webinars called Art History In Focus this month.

Budd Liverpool FC auction sells out
Sports specialist Graham Budd’s March 2 auction of the contents of Liverpool FC’s Melwood training centre netted a sell-out white-glove result, going £140,000 over high estimate overall.
The sale, held because the Reds moved to their Kirkby training centre (the Liverpool Academy facility before then) at the end of last year, took a £373,000 hammer total.
Best-seller at double the top estimate was the Champions Wall display from the main reception at Melwood showing the club’s 48 major trophies won. It made £30,000 (plus 17.5% buyer’s premium).
Appointments at Christie’s in the US
Christie’s has promoted Bonnie Brennan to president of Christie’s Americas. She has been with the auction house for the past eight years as chairman of business development in the Americas. She will work with Marc Porter, chairman of Christie’s Americas.
Brennan’s role as president follows the appointment of Jennifer Zatorski to the newly created role of global managing director strategic initiatives in the CEO’s office at Christie’s in the US. She has been with the company for 28 years.
Sotheby’s to hold Lagerfeld auction
Sotheby’s is to auction the collection of the late fashion Karl Lagerfeld (1933-2019). The valuation is taking place and a sale is planned in Monaco in the second half of 2021.
Gem-A launches Cheshire branch
A regional branch of The Gem-A, the Gemmological Association of Great Britain (providing gem education), has been launched in Cheshire.
The North West Gem-A regional branch has been formed by auction house Wilson 55. Events are planned this year and students, current members of the Gem-A and the general public are all welcome to join.

Bonhams gripped by Picassomania
Bonhams is holding a Picassomania sale on March 23 in London featuring a range of items by Pablo Picasso (1881-1973).
'Femme aux Cheveux Flous' (1964) by Pablo Picasso from an edition of 100. It is estimated at £15,000-25,000 at Bonhams.
Lucia Tro Santafe, head of sale at Bonhams, said: “Picasso is rightly one of the most celebrated artists of the 20th Century, and Picassomania showcases the full diversity of his oeuvre – and his versatility as an artist. It includes all mediums, from ceramics and prints, through to unique works on paper and photographs.”
Stolen Maiolica vase is returned
A stolen Maiolica bombola vase has been recovered with the help of the Art Loss Register.
It was registered on the ALR database in 2016 by Thames Valley Police following a burglary from a private residence.
Stolen Maiolica bombola vase now returned to its owner.
The vase was offered at auction in the UK in late 2020 and located as part of the ALR’s due diligence checks and withdrawn from sale.
Auction house Woolley & Wallis worked with the police, the ALR and the consignor – who had bought it in good faith – in order for the vase to be returned to its owner.
Cumbrian firm starts music sales
Mitchells of Cockermouth is launching its first specialist Music sale. It is scheduled for May 6.
Auctioneer and head of department Michael Roberts is planning to introduce new categories and sales at the firm. He joined last year from Penrith Farmers’ & Kidd.

The number of volumes of books on collectables and antiques that have been bought in a licensing deal by WorthPoint Corporation from Schroeder Publishing. The Collector Books library includes multiple series of specialty antique and collectable guidebooks published between 1970 to 2010, including the Schroeder’s Antiques Price Guide.
