Egyptian 25th or 26th Dynasty polychrome limestone relief fragment, estimated at £70,000-90,000 at Christie’s.
Acquired by the vendor from Galerie Harmakhis in Brussels in 2017, it has a much earlier provenance to Maurice Nahman (1868-1948) who bought it in Cairo in the 1930s.
Measuring 20in (51cm) long, the fragment – probably from the monumental tomb of Montuemhat in Luxor – depicts the carrying of a log intended for shipbuilding. The theme is one known in Old Kingdom tombs but this dates from the Late Period c.664-525BC.
Estimate £70,000-90,000.
