Now a long-overdue reappraisal of John’s work is under way with some experts acknowledging she was a better painter than her brother. Her paintings, many of female sitters and quiet domestic interiors, are notable for being subtly rendered in a close range of tones.

A works on paper exhibition at London dealer Browse & Darby in Cork Street examines her watercolours, gouaches and pencil drawings from the early 20th century. Gwen John, until July 16, includes still-lifes, informal portraits and studies of cats with prices from £6000-12,000.
