The 7½ x 4 x 3in (19 x 10.5 x 8cm) item was carved to all faces with a series of couples depicting scenes of courtly love.

It was similar to the slightly wider example from the same period carved with chivalric subjects that sold for £1.2m at Lyon & Turnbull in May this year (see ATG No 2494).

Prunier’s casket had a provenance to a private collection in eastern France, purchased from the dealer Charles Ratton in 1952.

It was estimated at €70,000-80,000 at the auction on July 11 and ended up selling for €160,000 (£136,750).
