The letter was written to John Murdoch, a Scottish Christian missionary who served in Ceylon and India, and concerns Nightingale’s ongoing campaigns for improving public health at home and abroad.
Following the Crimean War, she turned her attention to the health of the British Army in India, demonstrating that bad drainage, contaminated water, overcrowding, and poor ventilation were causing the high death rate.
