'Spanish Chair' designed by Børge Mogensen, one of pair each priced at £3000 from Whittle Antik.

The Spanish Chair, first shown in 1958 at the Cabinetmakers’ Guild Exhibition in Copenhagen, was designed by Børge Mogensen (1914-72) for Danish furniture company Fredericia.

The Danish designer drew much of his inspiration from traditional chairs of other cultures, such as English Windsor chairs and the Shaker movement in America.

In 1958, Mogensen and his family travelled to Andalusia in Spain where he was fascinated by an old chair with a wide seat and broad armrests. Once back in Denmark, he created the Spanish Chair using leather and wood – the traditional way of making furniture in Spain.

The example pictured here is one of a pair available at Whittle Antik for £3000 each.
