Thomas Daniell watercolour, sold for £50,000 by Forge and Lynch.
Daniell, who together with his nephew William is best known for topographical views of India, painted the original watercolour of this scene on the spot during the siege of Srinagar in the Kingdom of Garhwal in the Lower Himalayas on April 28, 1789.
On that day, William noted in his diary: “In consequence of the foresaid news [of imminent attack] the inhabitants of Srinagar were crossing the river as quick as possible, they crowded on the bridge so fast that we thought at times it would have broke.”
Antiquities and Islamic and Indian art specialist duo Oliver Forge and Brendan Lynch have sold the 3ft 4in x 23in (1.03m x 59cm) watercolour on paper for about £50,000 to a private collector.
