Comprising some 550 works in all, and accompanied by a virtually full run of all the special and promotional publications of those years, it sold for £42,500 (£30,355).
Other lots in that Hindman (15/20/12% buyer’s premium) auction, such as the group of some 75 Currier & Ives prints from a single Midwestern collection noted below, presented just single, but very valuable sheets of paper.
Two of the rarer items in that collection, both dating from 1866, were billed as only the second copies seen at auction in 60 years. Large format litho prints with hand colouring, they were Yosemite Valley – California, featuring a view of …Bridal Falls, at $17,000 (£12,145), and The Rocky Mountains, Emigrants Crossing the Plains, which made $16,000 (£11,430).

Both views were the work of an English-born artist, Fanny Palmer, as was a bright example of a famous railway-focused subject of 1868, Across the Continent..., that proved the most expensive of the prints on offer at $18,000 (£12,855).
However, that last-mentioned print once made a much higher sum.
The sale took place on May 12.
