The 1930s nephrite, silver and enamel-mounted set, comprising a clock signed Cartier to the dial, two inkwells and an 11½in (29.5cm) long pen tray, triggered a phone battle between a French bidder and London dealer at Clarke & Simpson (18% buyer’s premium) on June 19.
Complete with its original Cartier silk-lined leather case, the set was estimated at £4000-6000 at the Campsea Ashe rooms but went to London at £27,400.
