They collaborated on several projects including the Palais Stoclet in Brussels: Hoffmann designed the building; Klimt painted a celebrated frieze in the interior.
In Vienna they also had close connections. Around 1903-05 Hoffmann designed several pieces of furniture for the studio Klimt had been using since 1892, a building at the end of a wild garden in the western part of Vienna. The furniture was paid for by Fritz Wärndorfer, the co-founder of the Wiener Werkstätte and patron of the arts.
Among the pieces was this oak chair with leather seat that is being sold by Dorotheum in Vienna on July 7 with a guide of €15,000-25,000.
It could be seen on contemporary photos of the studio, but has long been considered lost. In fact, it never got far from Klimt’s family. On the artist’s death in 1918, his sister-in-law Fanny inherited many of his possessions. It later passed to her niece and then by descent to the current consignor.
