It is characteristic of her early works, which are marked by a sense of ennui.

From an edition of 16 measuring 8½ x 8in (22 x 20cm), the print is offered for £575 in Abbott and Holder’s exhibition of works from the estate of the painter and lithographer, titled Portrait of a Woman.

Despite mourning the death of her son, Gabain joined the War Artists Advisory Committee recording the contribution of women during the Second World War.

The exhibition runs at the Belgravia gallery until December 23.
