Making its first appearance on the market direct from the artist’s estate, this industrial scene by Theodore Major (1908-99) is available to buy for £34,000 from Cheshire gallery Collect Art.

The 2ft 6in x 3ft 1in (76 x 94cm) oil on board is titled Meeting at Wigan.

“This industrial Wigan scene is highly collected and rare in this red tone”, said Martin Heaps, founder of Collect Art. “The thick impasto is typical of the artist’s work and this painting is a great example.”

A fervent Lancastrian, Major painted in a wide range of styles “to disturb and extend consciousness in the mind of the viewer”, with his flower still-lifes and industrial scenes most sought after on the secondary market.

He was against materialism, the commercial gallery system and the sale of his pictures to rich collectors and retained about 3000 of his pictures which he said were painted for ordinary people.
