Doppelspindel-Rot by Ernst Wilhelm Nay - €1.8m (£1.55m) at Ketterer Kunst.
With international bidding online, on the phones and in the saleroom, it outstripped the €200,000 estimate to sell for €1.8m (£1.55m).
The 6ft 7in x 6ft 3in (2 x 1.9m) painting, signed, dated and titled on the stretcher, is one of the artist’s last works.
It came from the Deutsche Bank Collection and was acquired directly from the artist. The painting will now become part of a Swiss collection.
The auction took place on June 18.
