A portait of a man wearing an exotic oriental turban by the 17th artist Cornelis Bisschop (1630-74) was one of the highlights of the two-day auction held by the Hôtel des Ventes de Monte Carlo (25/23/20% buyer’s premium) on September 25-26. It sold for €78,000 (£70,910) against a guide of €40,000-60,000.
The oil on panel, previewed in ATG No 2460, had been slightly enlarged at the sides to measure 23 x 15¾in (60 x 43cm). It had a label from 1966 for Agnew and Sons and a provenance from Agnews to the collector and museum benefactor, Sir Alfred Chester Beatty.

In a September 22 sale held at the Drouot auction centre, an oil on cradled oak panel of a sailing ship at sea by the landscape artist Saloman Van Ruysdael (c.1600/03-70) featured in a 247- lot sale of paintings, furniture and works of art held by Peschetau-Badin (27% buyer’s premium inc VAT).
The small-scale work, measuring 7 x 9½in (18 x 24cm), was monogrammed on the right of the ship’s rudder and had the seal of the Sedelmeyer collection to the back.
It outpaced its €40,000-60,000 guide to take €210,000 (£190,910).
