Promoting the triumphs and attractions of the Soviet philosophy just 15 years or so after the Revolution, the selection of seven posters depict appealing images of Moscow, the Volga river and the Trans-Siberian Express.

Many would have been designed for tourist offices in other parts of the world in the hope of attracting foreign currency to the Soviet Union. From 1929, Intourist was the official Soviet tourist agency for overseas visitors.

British Railways Edinburgh poster c.1950 – estimate £400-600 at Ewbanks.

A more familiar sight is displayed on a British Railways poster, Edinburgh – See Scotland by Train, which was designed c.1950 by the Irish artist Lance Cattermole (1898-1992) and printed by Waterlow & Sons.

Grandson of George Cattermole (1800- 68), illustrator for Charles Dickens’ The Old Curiosity Shop, the Slade graduate designed a series of Scottish region posters for British Rail. This linen backed royal quad measuring 3ft 4in x 4ft 2in (1.02 x 1.27m) is estimated at £400-600.
