Offered in the Californian saleroom on October 1, and in the original vellum-backed and gilt-stamped boards, this was No 88 of the 300 copies of the limited edition first that were signed on the limitation page by both Bobby Jones and his collaborator on the book, OB Keeler – and again by Jones on the frontispiece, beneath his portrait.

Jones, who won 13 major tournaments and founded both the Augusta National Golf Course and the Masters Tournament, remains to this day one of the more beloved figures in golfing history. Keeler, a journalist who has been described as Jones’ Boswell, saw the golfer win all those major championships.

This copy made a low-estimate $11,000 (£8525), but a couple of copies have made $14,000 apiece at auction – one of them in the same rooms in 2005.
