1. Barges, ships and ports were the favoured subject of Gordon Hereward Hales (1916-97), an artist who became a founder-member of the Royal Society of Marine Artists. This 19¼in x 2ft 5in (49 x 74cm) signed oil on board from 1973 titled Hythe Quay, Maldon appeared at Keys of Aylsham on March 25 estimated at £400-600.
2. The painter Charles Jones (1836-92) is often known as ‘sheep Jones’ due to the prominence of ovine subjects in his artistic output. This 6¾x 8½in (17 x 22cm) oil on panel of sheep in winter landscape was a relatively small example of his work and it got away again at Keys of Aylsham on March 25 against a £800-1200 pitch.
3. Paris-born Pierre de Clausades (1910-76) specialised in painting landscapes, especially those around the French capital, Brittany and the Loire Valley. Trees in a landscape, a 17¼x 21¼in (44 x 54cm) signed oil on canvas, surpassed a £300-400 estimate at Gorringe’s of Lewes, East Sussex, on April 20, even though it had a dirty covering of varnish or heavy nicotine which meant it required a good clean.
