Uncharacteristically free from humans, these works were painted by the artist periodically over many decades, often in a brighter palette and depicting tranquil waters dotted with pastel-coloured sails.
This 12½ x 14in (32 x 36cm) signed limited-edition print offered at Staffordshire saleroom Cuttlestones (21% buyer’s premium) in Penkridge on March 5 sold for £5800 against a £200-300 estimate.
Although not stated in the catalogue, it is likely to belong to the Sailing Boats edition produced in 1972 by Venture Prints of Bristol in an edition of 850.
