Opinions are given the first Tuesday of each month, 2.30-5pm, but because of Covid-19 this should be confirmed directly with the museum.

Although at least five of John Constable’s seven children drew or painted, Lionel is the most talented – between 1849-55 he exhibited 13 works at the Royal Academy – but the quality of his work is very mixed.

Given that Lionel’s largest known canvases are 14 x 18in (35 x 45cm), it is interesting to note Mr Carter’s painting is 19½ x 14in (49 x 35cm).

Leggatt label?

Thanks also to Simon Waters, of Pebworth, Worcestershire, who contacted us to say: “I believe the printed numbers, if I recall correctly, were those used by Leggatt Brothers, a major firm in the 20th century, and who would have dealt in both Lionel and John Constable.”
