Part of a May 28 sale held by Freeman’s (20% buyer’s premium), it was an 1897 first and at $6000 (£4880) it equalled an auction record set at Christie’s New York in 2005.

Another work that did better than expected was among a number of Rupert Brooke lots. Edited by Edward Carpenter, Iolaus: An Anthology of Friendship of 1902 was not one of his own works, but it bore his bookplate and signature. It sold at $3750 (£3050).

Occasional Greek marginalia was also thought to be in Brooke’s hand and loosely inserted was a now puzzling postcard on which he had written: “I seem to be very hard up. So you can pay me the rest as soon as you get it.”
