1. This 18 x 21in (45 x 54cm) oil on canvas by Pierre de Clousade (1910-76) is typical of the sanitised realism found in the 20th century French painter’s cloudscapes. It was offered with an inviting £400-600 estimate at Colchester auction house Reeman Dansie on February 11 (comparative pictures sell at auction between £1000-3000).
2. Born in Kent in 1933, British artist Kenneth Newton (1933-84) is best known for his dark still-lifes and flower paintings, recalling the Dutch memento mori tradition. This 22in x 3ft 2in (56 x 96cm) oil on canvas still-life of mushrooms, chestnuts and blackberries pitched at £1000-1500, sold at Cheffins of Cambridge on February 13.
3. This 18th century English School oil painting replicates a 1744 print by an anonymous printmaker satirising the lack of British preparedness for a French invasion. Titled The Court Fright and signed with the apparent alias Vander Smokehim, the 2ft 3in x 4ft (69cm x 1.22m) oil on canvas sold at Bonhams in Knightsbridge on February 12.
