1. This oil on board depicts a Fairey Battle flying over RAF Binbrook and is dated to the year the station opened in 1940. It was painted by Derby-born artist Frank Beresford (1881-1967) when he was a war artist for the British and American air forces and was offered at Keys in Aylsham on January 24.

2. The banks of the Thames bounding Chelsea feature prominently in the works of Whistler’s studio assistant, Walter Greaves (1846-1930). This 7 x 6in (18 x 15in) crayon and wash depicting sail barges at Lindsey Wharf, with provenance to the Michael Parkin Gallery in London, sold at Battle saleroom Burstow & Hewett on January 22.

3. This late-19th century portrait study depicts the mixed-race English conductor and composer Samuel Coleridge Taylor (1872-1912) as a boy when he posed for painters associated with Croydon Art Club. The 18 x 14in (46 x 35cm) oil on canvas, signed HD Turner and dated 1882, was offered at Bearnes Hampton & Littlewood in Exeter on January 21.
