Complete in their two original travelling library cases resembling folio volumes – “well adapted for travelling in the seat of a post chaise, or for library furniture”, as a contemporary advertisement proclaimed – the 109 volumes issued by the Apollo Press of Edinburgh in the years 1776-82 are, like those cases, bound in contemporary tree calf gilt.

Bid to a double-estimate and record $24,000 (£18,460) at Freeman’s (25/20/12% buyer’s premium) of Philadelphia on October 14 was a complete and well-preserved example of publisher John Bell’s great Poets of Great Britain… collection.
