A long-time stallholder at the market, Taylor was invited to set up the pop-up by Spitalfields’ landlords in late July. He jumped at the chance, opening just a few days later on August 2.

He is a specialist in Mid-century and industrial lighting, furniture, aeronautical antiques posters and other decorative items, and is a frequent exhibitor at events such as the Decorative Antiques & Textiles Fair in Battersea.

First proper shop

“This is the first proper shop I’ve had,” Taylor told ATG. “I’d had a rest during lockdown and then the moment I started up at Spitalfieds again they asked me to move in.

“Because I’m used to doing the Decorative Fair and other events I’m used to just moving in and making things look good.”

He set the space up with a view to giving it a gallery feel with open space and pictures on the wall.

Taylor does much of his business on Instagram (@philtaylorscoolstuff), and continues to trade there too, enjoying using the shop as a new setting for photographing his stock.

His aeroplane pictures, which are always popular, have found plenty of buyers since he hung a selection of them.

However, he adds that “it’s interesting to see what sells when you have the space,” such as larger pieces of furniture.
