The locally consigned 20 x 2ft 6in (50 x 76cm) oil on canvas was monogrammed MW and dated July 62 to the lower left. The names of the cattle, Ayrshire Lad and Miss Morton, were also inscribed on the right of the canvas, which had some minor paint losses and discolouration.

Against modest expectations of $200-300, the lot was pursued to $5500 (£4263), selling to a buyer from California.

Indian works

Other best-sellers were two works by modern Indian artists.

Raging Horse, a 22 x 2ft 6in (56 x 76cm) watercolour by Maqbool Fisa Husain (1915-2011), signed in Hindi in the lower right corner, realised $13,000 (£10,080).

Woman with a Pear Basket, a 22 x 16in (56 x 40cm) oil on canvas by B Prabha (1933-2001), made $9500 (£7365).
