Chilton’s medal for the 1951-52 season sold on thesaleroom.com for £22,000 (estimate £10,000-12,000) to a private buyer, an ex-pat based in the Far East, at Graham Budd’s (17.5% buyer’s premium) auction in London on June 3-4. It came to auction by family descent.
Chilton had played briefly for Liverpool but joined United in 1938 before serving in the war with the Durham Light infantry.
Post-war he was centre-half for Matt Busby’s team and was a key member in the 1951-52 league success – Manchester United’s first league title in 41 years. In 1955 he went on to become player/manager for Grimsby Town, then as manager for both Wigan Athletic and Hartlepool United.
